BI Manager is a robust integrated package that provides powerful facilities to effectively document and maintain Cognos Business Intelligence deployments.
The main features are listed below.
a. Metadata Manager
b. Change Control with Help Desk
c. Project Management
d. Resource Allocation
e. Budget Vs. Actual Hours, Costs
f. Hardware/Software Documentation
g. Knowledge Base and Support Call History
h. PPES-IWR Auditor
Benefits to the features listed above:
a. Metadata Manager– BI Manager provides the ability to import Impromptu Reports and .iqd’s, and then create a Report Spec automatically. The report SQL is parsed into Business Elements, which become “building blocks” for reports. Then a report spec is created which shows which Business Elements are used in the report and which defined User Groups have access. The Report Spec can be distributed to report consumers. See Metadata Manager
b. Change Control with Help Desk – BI Manager contains a full-featured help desk module, which allows administrators to log request calls. The calls are detailed, assigned a developer, and tracked. Objects (files) can be associated with each request, along with Metadata changes, with check-in/check-out. Change history is kept on each Object when the request is satisfied. Tracking reports for requests are included. This feature is useful for support of Cognos reports and cubes in a disciplined Change Control process.
c. Project Management – BI Manager provides a full-featured Project Management module. Multiple projects can be tracked. Tasks can be defined with dependencies, and moved between Projects. A Work Log is provided for developers and outside consultants, with full security, which allows them to log work, and then tie their work to the Tasks they are assigned to. This allows for fully detailed status reporting on Projects. Also has the ability to create Project Tasks from request calls inputted into the Help Desk, for ongoing projects.
d. Resource Allocation - Reports are available on the worker level, across multiple projects. The Project Plan has a Resource Allocation section which shows total hours estimated for all tasks assigned, against the total available time estimated for the project. Automatically reallocate worker resources by changing the “Assigned” to field of each task. Add outside vendors (consultants) to the project team, and limit their access through security. A Work Log Report is available which shows all work done, Project or non-Project related, for a Worker over a range of dates.
e. Estimated Vs. Actual Hours, Costs – Reports are available for Project Status, which shows task assignment and work done. Add hourly cost to Project Members (internal and/or external) to get Budget Vs. Actual Costs.
f. Hardware/Software Documentation – A Server Architecture module is included, which allows full hardware technical documentation of servers (server model, IP address, processors, memory disk), and resident software down to the version and serial number. Tracks prior versions of software installed. This is useful when combined with Support calls, and to aid in upgrades and migrations.
g. Knowledge Base and Support Call History – Allows workers to introduce any work they see fit into a Knowledge Base, accessible by all. The Knowledge Base Report can produce information based on Subject or Product. A Support Call History module is also included, which tracks all support calls to software or hardware vendors. Shows server architecture, allows for detail and tracking. Both the Knowledge Base and Support Call History help IT capture and distribute critical technical knowledge of products and issues.
h. PPES-IWR Auditor– BI Manager can collect and parse Powerplay and IWR Audit logs, keep track of Audit Events (an Audit Event is an attempt to collect audit information), and produce Activity reports for both Powerplay/IWR and Audit events. BI Manager does not delete audit logs; rather it renames and copies them, and provides a file that contains a list of the log files processed with each Audit event. This feature is useful for tracking usage of Powerplay cubes and IWR reports.
