Metadata Manager is an easy to use software product that allows you to manage your existing Cognos Series 7 deployment by parsing your existing Cognos reporting objects (Impromptu reports, Powerplay cubes and reports, catalogs) and documenting them. The report SQL (or catalog metadata) is parsed into a metadata repository, where full dynamic metadata reporting can be done by Data Sources, Data Source tables, columns, filter/joins, Reporting Elements and their definitions (calculations), as well as catalogs. Reporting includes full technical documentation of reports(Report Specs), full impact analysis and migration roadmap export to Excel. Metadata Manager also includes a catalog which connects to the underlying data model, for custom metadata reporting.
This approach has many benefits when managing Impromptu reports and Powerplay cubes:
1. Metadata Manager allows you to collect and document all of the Impromptu Report Specs (and Powerplay cube specs)in your organization, quickly and easily. You now have a central repository, which spans catalogs, that allows you to understand which tables and columns are most frequently reported on.
2. With a central repository, you can now develop standardized naming conventions, which are consistent and clear, across the organization. Metadata Manager creates Element Definitions for each Element, and the report the Element Definition came from. The Element Definitions describe whether the Element is a straight column pull or a calculation, and what the calculation logic is.
3. You can document your Powerplay cubes, too. By parsing the Transactional query .iqd’s, you can then produce a report spec for Powerplay cubes, which are accounted for with all the Impact management features of the product. Powerplay .ppx's can also be extracted directly from the Upfront data store and documented as well.
4. Metadata Manager provides Excel outputs of all the technical information needed to model properly in Framework Manager, when you are ready to migrate to Cognos 8. Metadata Manager is invaluable at doing "housekeeping" on your existing Impromptu catalogs and reports, before migration. This provides an "Object Mapping" approach to the migration, which gives developers much more control over the migration, in a fraction of the effort.
5. With a tool like Metadata Manager, you can now encourage users to “register” their Impromptu reports with IT, if they would like to be notified of underlying database changes. In a distributed reporting environment where users develop their own reports, managing the reporting environment can be extremely difficult.

Maintaining your Impromptu report and .iqd metadata is easy with Metadata Manager's powerful automation features, which can document your entire deployment at once, and update only changed files and reports going forward. It is not unusual to register up to 500 reports in one day! A full suite of administrative reports is included. In addition, an Impromptu catalog is included with the software, which allows you to create custom reports for IT and/or consumers, and publish them to the Web using IWR.
