BUSINESS CASE: Orix, a leasing company for construction equipment and trucks, needed to consolidate its leasing portfolio across its decentralized subsidiaries. Cash received, collateral evaluation, risk ratings, and repossessed assets were all criteria for tracking.
TECHNICAL CASE: It also was using a number of different financial leasing programs to track its portfolio, including a home grown AS/400 system. Orix needed to provide a consistent set of reports which would track contracts, rolled up to makers.
TECHNICAL CHALLENGE: These disparate transactional systems provided nonconforming information on the contract portfolio - meaning that fields provided for reporting did not have exactly equal business meanings (homonyms) and fields in the different systems had the same meaning, but different names (synonyms). This needed to be reconciled in meaning and value, conforming to a standard. The reporting ETL was initially developed in Microsoft SQL Server DTS; it was determined that DecisionStream was needed to provide the functionality needed to deliver a consistent, consolidated data mart. All Elements were defined in businesss and technical terms using BI Manager, which was then used to design a new data mart data model delivered by DecisionStream Jobstreams.
SOLUTION: Not only was the data mart model refined, but the Impromptu Reports (approx. 25) needed to be reengineered. The result was that the Impromptu Reports run faster, and other data problems in the DTS application were addressed in DecisionStream, resulting in significantly more accurate reporting.
