Concepts Links:
Audit Collection the practice of collecting information on the behavior of users with respect to consuming reports. See Audit Collection Concepts.
BI Instance The exact state of a BI deployment at a particular point in time. This includes the exact status of the database metadata, the report specs, and the data.
Build In DecisionStream, a process that extracts, transforms, and loads (delivers) data. In Transformer, a process that creates a multidimensional cube.
Change Control The practice of documenting changes to a BI deployment, in terms of files, database metadata, and context. Context for changes includes the person who approves the change, the reason, when the changes were made, what exactly was changed in terms of metadata and objects (files), who is responsible for changing the instance, and metadata changes to the data warehouse, data mart and reports. See BI Manager, Change Control Process.
Change Control History The ability to reference historical changes to the instance of a BI deployment. This should be provided by the Help Desk. See BI Manager, Change Control Process.
Change Control Request A defined request to change the instance of a BI deployment. This typically involves object and/or Metadata changes to the BI deployment instance. See Help Desk, Change Control, Change Control History, BI Manager.
Data Source place from where data originates. The defined Data Source should have a unique name, database, and schema.
Data Source Column Columns of defined Data Source Tables. They are not necessarily, but should be, unique in name.
Data Source Table A tables that is uniquely identified with a data source. A Data Source Table can not have multiple Data Sources.
Data Target place where data is delivered as a result of a Data Load Process. The defined Data Target should have a unique name, database and schema.
Data Target Column A defined column that is contained in a Data Target Table. Each Data Target Column should be unique in name.
Data Target Table A defined table that is uniquely identified with a Data Target. It is highly recommended that each Data Target Table should be unique in name.
Element Building block of a BI deployment. Elements have a uniquely defined business meaning. Elements should not have homonyms or synonyms, and should be named according to a standard as defined by the company. Elements are grouped together in Report Specs to define a report. In the context of DecisionStream, an Element is either an Attribute or a Derivation. An Attributes Property is the Element Definition, as is the Property of a Derivation. In the context of Impromptu, any report column is an Element, and its data definition is the Element Definition. In the context of Powerplay, each dimensional level is an Element, as is each measure. See Metadata Manager.
Element Custodians An Element Definition that uses another Element in its calculation. See Metadata Manager User Guide.
Element Definition The source of data that an Element provides. This can be in the form of a column in a table, or a calculation. Elements can have many Element Definitions.
Element Definition Dependency An Element Definition that is dependent on another Definition of the same Element.Typically, when Metadata Manager parses an Element Definition which is a calculation, it parses the calculation as it appears in the SQL. Impromptu does this when creating the SQL, even if the user embeds a Report Column within a calculation. Metadata Manager provides a way to provide this dependency so that the Impact reports reflect this.
Element Data Target Typically, this will be a delivered column in a Data Mart or Data Warehouse table, as the result of an ETL (Extract, Transformation and Load) process. All Element Data Targets have Element Data Sources, but not all Elements with Element Data Sources have data targets.
Help Desk Facility whose main function is to capture, track, and report User and IT Requests in the form of Change Control Requests. See BI Manager Overview, Change Control Process.
Impact Report - A Report which shows the impact of a change. For example, one of Metadata Manager's Impact Reports shows the impact that a change to a Data Source Column would have on all Element Definitions, and Report Specs. See Metadata Manager Overview.
JobStream A construct in DecisionStream that allows builds (data load processes) to be linked together to facilitate complex deliveries. Each build can be a step in the JobStream.
Metadata Management The practice of compiling, maintaining and reporting on information regarding a BI deployment. See Metadata Management Concepts.
Process Management - the practice of identifying, formalizing, evolving, and optimizing data processes, in the context of Business Intelligence. See Process Management Concepts.
Report Spec Definition of a report that is constructed and/or distributed to end users for consumption. A Report Spec should contain, at a minimum, the following: defined characteristics such as report description, refresh frequency, report type and software used; User Group references; and a listing of Elements that the report contains. This is useful in determining which reports are affected by a Change Control Request. See Metadata Manager, BI Manager.
